This 2000 BMW M Coupe One of the most controversial M cars of the twentieth century, the E36/8 BMW M Coupe was introduced in the late nineties as a fixed roof companion to the M Roadster. Nicknamed the "clown shoe" by automotive journalists and enthusiasts alike, there's no question that the styling of the M Coupe was an acquired taste. Even BMW knew the mixed feelings the car would generate from their brand loyalists as they described its look as "a shape that truly dares to be different." When it came down to performance, though, there was no denying the dynamic ability of the clown shoe.
Produced for only four model years, the M Coupe was brought to life under the leadership of BMW engineer Burkhard Göschel. BMW wasn't keen on the idea of the M Coupe as it created competition for the legendary M3. However, sharing the doors and everything from the A-pillar forward with the roadster allowed Göschel to keep developmental costs low enough for production approval. Along with most of the interior, the M Coupe shared the driveline with its drop-top sibling.
While all coupes and roadsters were powered by a DOHC 3.2-liter in-line six, for model years 1999-2000, North American cars received the S52, rated 240 horsepower and 236 lb/ft of torque. As with the contemporary M3, Europeans received the powerful S50 engine in their M Coupes and Roadsters. In 2001, all coupes and roadsters, regardless of where they were sold, were upgraded to the S54. No matter the powerplant, a ZF Type C 5-speed manual was the only transmission choice. This combination allowed for 0-60 MPH sprints in the 5.5-second range and a top speed of 137 MPH for 1999-2000 North American spec cars.
This Estoril Blue M Coupe is one of 213 cars built for the 2000 model year with a sunroof and Estoril Blue/Black Nappa leather interior. The odometer shows just over 27,000 miles, most of which were accumulated in California, where it spent the first 23 years of its life until being acquired by the current seller. As the badge on the rear hatch calls out, this particular M Coupe boasts numerous Dinan upgrades, including exhaust, strut tower brace, sway bar, H & R springs, and the highly desirable Vortech Supercharger. According to the previous owner, the upgrades were installed at a BMW dealership before his ownership. While in his care, he had the wheels refinished, new Continental Extreme tires installed, and upgraded to Turner stainless steel brake lines.
Offered by Auto Rossa Auto Sales, this is a rare opportunity to own a low-mileage M Coupe in a highly desirable color combination along with the sought-after Dinan upgrades as a bonus. Included with the sale are the owner's manual and related books and cards, extensive service records, and a clean, CarFax
